Our plan was never to foster, but when vulnerable children have a name, a face, and a story, it becomes personal…so we couldn’t say no.
My husband and I have been married for almost 19 years now and when we had been married 5 years we began discussing adoption.
Among the many options of avenues we could pursue, we chose to adopt through our state’s foster system.
Our home was licensed as a resource (foster) home from 2008-2015. We have had 13 children in that time, 3 of whom we adopted.
Going into Foster Care, our number one concern was for our biological children at the time. And honestly, our second concern was our own comfort and feelings.
Fostering and adopting is one of the hardest things I have ever done. Daily, I have to fight the temptation to live comfortably and without conflict, because comfortable is not what Jesus calls us to, and conflict – when it is resolved in a healthy and appropriate way – brings God glory.
Fostering is messy, it is like an intense roller coaster with many unexpected turns and dips. Our job isn’t to criticize the system or the social workers.. Our job is to foster children and to encourage the workers that God places in our lives for however long the season.
